Southern Shore Region

Southern Shore Region

The land of charm, grace, and 30 miles of wide sandy beaches which offer sunbathing, fishing, and watersports galore. Boardwalks and amusements, world class golf courses, gourmet restaurants, several exceptional wineries and breweries, a historic village, eco-tourism, and a top-rated zoo round out the region.

At New Jersey's southern tip is the city of Cape May, a National Historic Landmark with more than 600 Victorian-era buildings. Shop along cobblestone streets, take in the Victorian-era architecture, or dine in one of the many gourmet restaurants or relax on the beach with a good book.

Just next door is the Wildwoods, with their wide, white sandy beaches and a dizzying array of exciting boardwalk rides, games, and attractions. Enjoy a tour that features the Wildwoods wonderful 1950's doowop architecture. Or stroll along the boardwalk, voted one of the best in the country.

Up the coast, you'll find Ocean City, America's Greatest Family Resort, where you'll always find wacky special events, a family-style boardwalk with rides and entertainment. Explore the unique shops of Asbury Avenue. The city's beach was selected as one of the country's finest.

During a visit to the Southern Shore Region, you'll see its history wherever you turn. Celebrate the area's glass-making heritage at Wheaton Village or step back in time at Historic Cold Spring Village where you can experience life in the early to mid-19th century in South Jersey.

If you feel the need for speed check out all the fast-paced activities and events at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville. If you want a slower pace visit the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. The museum houses a number of aircraft, engines, special exhibits, and educational interactive displays.

As you drive through the region, you will find quaint antique shops tempting you to take a piece of history home with you. Enjoy you tour by visiting one of several wineries or local breweries you can tour and taste the day away.

Nature lovers will find the Southern Shore Region to be perfect year-round. Spring and fall bring thousands of migratory birds to the shores of the cape. In the fall, Cape May is the number one location in the country to spot migrating hawks and other raptors. And the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor celebrates the area's coastal heritage, hosting many fun and educational festivals and events.

Cape May County Zoo offers a close-up look at some of nature's most interesting creatures. The zoo features more than 550 inhabitants representing 250 species that occupy over 200 acres of beautiful natural wooded areas, open space parcels, and Tree to Tree Adventure Park where you can zip, swing, and climb. Maintained in their natural state are winding trails popular among hikers, bikers, joggers and wildlife watchers. Picnic areas, fishing ponds, a disc golf course, tennis courts, and playgrounds make the park a perfect family adventure.
