Focused on the Future @ MAC

The 27th Annual Mid-Atlantic Coastal States Conference & Trade Show ended Wednesday afternoon in Dover, DE with a Cracker Barrel wrap-up of the event. Selena Litmtman of Candy Hill Campground in Winchester, VA commented, "this is by far one of my favorite conferences" during the final session.

This year's conference featured 11 educational sessions and 3 keynote speakers all focusing on the future of the campground industry. Some of the educational sessions helped campground owners focus on branding, attracting the 'Girl Camper', refining Social Networking skills, and predicting what customers want. While other educational sessions focused on the operational aspects of the campground; insurance, propane safety, and new electrical codes. Owners also took the time to discuss bloopers, blunders, and practical safety they have experienced at their campgrounds. The frank discussion allowed owners to gain insight and learn from other owners' blunders.

The keynote speakers tied it all together. Katie Denis, VP, US Travel Association educated owners about the vacation planning habits of Americans and their latest endeavor, Project: Time-Off. Curtis Coleman, Founder,, spoke about how people like to travel in clusters during his educational session. His comments tied into the research RVIA and KOA presented about the new way people are vacationing. RVIA VP of Brand Marketing & Communications, Karen Redfern, also gave the group a look at what is happening with RVIA in the future. While Nichole Poisson, Franchise Development Manager, KOA, gave the group invaluable statistics and insight to the future of camping.

The trade show, with almost 30 vendors, gave attendees the opportunity to place orders and ask questions about products. Randy Pricksett, Sleepy Hollow Campground, Egg Harbor Township, NJ, mentioned he was glad to have the opportunity to learn about a few new products and cross some items off his purchasing To Do List.

This is the sixth year Joann DelVescio, Executive Director, New Jersey Campground Owners Association, has planned the event. Joann stated, "I feel this event is very important for the owners. I try to select topics that are relevant and current to the campground industry that will get the owners in the right mindset to start the season."
